Have you tried conan?

I love Peruvian food. Which is to say I love the varied cuisine of a large, diverse country where I spent some time a few years ago. So I was pretty happy to see that the NYTimes rated SF as the best place in the US to get good Peruvian food. But beware, the restaurants covered in the article are not cheap…

Butter & Garlic…who knew!

I just finished cooking a pot of pasta. I made the sauce by frying asparagus, garlic, and a (very) small amount of anaheim chili pepper in a ton of butter and a little milk. I honestly think i used too much butter. The asparagus is nice and tender, but the the dish overall is like drinking spicey cream. It’s good, but dangerous for your health.

I’ve realized lately that following recipes is actually a big part of improving one’s cooking; especially if you focus on getting very good at making a few simple things. I highly recommend Alice Waters’ “The Art of Simple Food”. It’s as much about learning how to treat food, spice, and kitchen utensils as it is about cooking. But every recipe I’ve made from it has been phenomenal!

I would definitely recommend the lemon curd, the caramel, the poached salmon, and the bolognese sauce.

Something off-putting

You Know your political career is trouble if…

You start comparing your extra-marital affair to someone else’s:

John Ensign now says that his affiar wasn’t as bad as President Clinton’s because Clinton lied about it. However valid Ensign might think this claim is, I still think it’s pretty funny that he’s resorting to the old ‘my affair wasn’t as bad that other guy’s’ trick. He also fails to address the issue of his parents paying his mistress $96,000. Oh well.

Thank god we all have this guy to keep beating on

This is a really cool album full of super heavy reverb and Nico-like vocals. Apparently, The Index were late 60s psych rockers from Detroit, but these songs definitely show various influences: there’s some nice surfer-guitar, and lyrics cribbed from Mowtown songs.

JAY-Z “RUN THIS TOWN” ( FEAT. RIHANNA & Kanye )

I’ve been very excited about Jay-Z’s newest album, The Blueprint 3, set for release on 9/11…mostly because Jay’s music was very formative for me; The Black Album was an anthem of swagger in my senior year of high school. And although the Jigga-man’s more recent work has not been as compelling, and although this particular song falls a little flat, I still can’t help but think/hope The Blueprint 3 will recapture some of the grandiose bombast that made me reevaluate my musical taste back in 2003.
